The Eco Committee and some of 1K went out onto the school field to complete the ‘What’s Under Your Feet’ challenge. This activity gives children the chance to be citizen scientists and carry out some important fieldwork for the British Trust for Ornithology (BTO).

We dug up a small patch of the playing field and took a good when we turned it over.
We were looking for ‘soil invertebrates’ but you’ll probably know them as worms, beetles, snails… basically any that doesn’t have a backbone. Children sorted them into groups using classification charts and the counted them. We will then input our data onto the web.

It was fantastic fun and children really enjoyed getting their hands messy and discovering the creatures within the soil. The 7 grubs we found were particularly exciting!!
