Discrete daily phonics sessions occur daily within EYFS and KS1. We follow the Letters and Sounds programme as the core of our phonics provision and we supplement this with resources from other published schemes such as Jolly Phonics and Read Write Inc.
Regular teaching time is allocated to reading. Individual and guided reading takes place regularly across the school and class story times are used to develop a love of reading.
We provide a large selection of reading books from a range of schemes including Oxford Reading Tree and we organise our reading books by colour bands in line with a nationally recognised colour scheme. For a useful explanation of colour banding visit https://www.readingchest.co.uk/book-bands#a
You will see a coloured sticker on every book which identifies what colour band the book falls into and it is this colour that should be referred to, rather than any other printed number, level or stage suggested on the back of the book. We encourage children to change their reading book and read at home on a regular basis. A reading diary is provided to all children and is a place where teachers, parents and children can comment upon their reading.
